Field Hockey Defeated By Nazareth In Extra Time

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College field hockey team came out on the losing end of Wednesday's 2-1 double-overtime contest with the Golden Flyers from Nazareth College at the Athletic Association Field. With the loss, Wells drops to 3-9 overall while the visiting Golden Flyers move to 6-8 on the season.

With the game tied at one aside in the second overtime period, Nazareth's Catherine Willard got behind the Express defense on a breakaway and potted her team-leading 12th goal of the season to send the Golden Flyers to their second overtime victory of the season. She also set up the game-tying goal at 48:42, sending a pass to the stick of Gabrielle DiSanto to send the contest to overtime.

Sophomore Logan Vincent (Marathon, N.Y.) scored the game's first goal, putting Wells up by a 1-0 margin at 40:03. Her second goal of the season came off a feed from classmate Kate Wells (Gardner, Mass.).

Nazareth outshot the Express by a 14-to-12 margin, but Wells held a distinct advantage in penalty corners (12-to-7). In the first overtime period, Wells' Shianne Stokes (Mays Landing, N.J.) had a shot that got behind the Nazareth goalkeeper by Leah Good stepped up large with a defensive save only 3:59 into the extra frame.

Wells goalkeeper Kendrick Wilson (Collins, N.Y.) allowed two goals on six shots while her counterpart from Nazareth, Lauren Devine, made five saves on six total shots.

The Express return to action Saturday, Oct. 17 as they welcome Oswego State University to campus for a 1 p.m. contest. Wells will honor its five graduating senior student-athletes on Senior Day with a pre-game ceremony.
