Buerkle Helps Men's Soccer To Shutout Over Gallaudet

AURORA, N.Y. – Sparked by two goals from senior Wyatt Buerkle (McGraw, N.Y.), the Wells College men's soccer team recorded a 5-0 shutout victory over visiting Gallaudet University on Saturday. Wells evens both its overall record (5-5) and North Eastern Athletic Conference record (2-2) following the win while Gallaudet dips to 1-6-2 overall, remaining winless in five NEAC matches.

A Buerkle penalty kick at 23:08 proved to be the game-winning goal as the Express held Gallaudet without a goal, limiting the Bison to only five shots throughout. Senior Tyler Morris (Maryland, N.Y.) scored his second goal of the season at 34:07, bouncing home a corner kick from sophomore Benjamen Schanbacher (Spencer, N.Y.), to give his team a 2-0 halftime lead.

Out of the break, Buerkle forced home a long pass from senior Ryan Mitzel (Voorhees, N.J.) to grant his team a 3-0 lead. Senior Max Cherry (Ridgewood, N.J.) later added his team-leading fifth goal of the year, depositing a back-heel pass from freshman Jack Pilgrim (North Kingstown, R.I.) into the back of the net to create his team's largest lead of the season at 4-0.

Freshman Justin Bingham (New Lebanon, N.Y.) scored his team's fifth goal at 60:12 as a Cherry feed from distance caught the foot of junior Hunter Sowersby (Sidney, N.Y.) at midfield. One-timing the ball forward, Bingham was out in front on a breakaway and eased the ball past Gallaudet goalkeeper Eric Setzer for the goal.

Wells goalkeeper Owen May (Warsaw, N.Y.) earned the victory between the posts, his fourth in six matches, after making one save. Freshman Trysten McLaughlin (Douglassville, Pa.) made his first collegiate appearance in goal for the Express in the final 21:27. Setzer drew the loss after allowing five goals on six Wells shots on frame.

The Express return to action Sunday, Oct. 4 as they welcome the Phoenix of Wilson College for a 12 p.m. NEAC contest at the South Athletic Field.
