FURMAN AND PLOOF SCORE IN LOSS TO GALLAUDET

(Washington, D.C.)─  The Wells College women's soccer team lost 4-2 to Gallaudet University in North Eastern Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon in Washington D.C. Rebecca Furman (Parkland, Fla./Marjory Stoneman Douglas) and Molly Ploof (Lake Placid, N.Y./Lake Placid) each scored, while Rachel Mattraw (Chaumont, N.Y./Lyme Central) finished with six saves to lead the Wells Express. The loss drops the Express to 1-7-1, 1-2 in NEAC action, while Gallaudet improves to 3-4, 1-1 in the NEAC.

It was a back and forth game in the first half with the two teams combing for five goals. Gallaudet jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Virginia Keeler 36 second into play. Furman answered seven minutes later with an unassisted goal to tie the game, 1-1. Lauren Hostovsky gave Gallaudet their second lead of the game delivering a low shot to the back left corner of the goal for a 2-1 advantage. The Express would battle back to tie the game, 2-2, on a goal by Molly Ploof at 20:53.   The two teams played to a defensive stale mate until eight minutes remaining in the first half.  Maddie Morgan sent a shot from 20 yards out that hit the cross bar and caromed in to give Gallaudet a 3-2 lead heading into halftime.

It was a tale of two halves as the second half would be a defensive struggle between the two clubs. Johanna Arigo delivered the lone goal of the half breaking in all alone and scoring on low shot to the left hand corner, giving Gallaudet the 4-2 advantage and eventual final game score.   Both teams finished with 10 shots on goal, while Wells held the slight advantage in corner kicks 5-4.

The Express will look to bounce back tomorrow against NEAC opponent Penn. St. Harrisburg at 12:00 p.m. in Harrisburg, Pa.
