Two Event Wins On Day 1 For Women's Swimming
The Wells College women's swimming team opened the 2019 North Eastern Athletic Conference championship meet on Friday, Feb. 15. Wells had one individual event champion, one relay champion, and four other swimmers claim place-winning spots in the A finals of individual events. Wells stands in third place among five teams after the first day of competition.
The Express opened the event finals session on Friday night with a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of Caitlin Lawrence, Shannon Simmons, Courtney Cloutier, and Callia Ortega swam a finals time of 1:50.39 and was 1.62 seconds faster than the second-place team. That time ranks seventh-fastest all-time at Wells in the 200 free relay.
Wells had another NEAC champion in the 200-yard individual medley as Courtney Cloutier swam 2:26.13 in the event finals for the win. It was nearly 10 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Cloutier, a senior from West Springfield, Mass., was an all-conference place-winner in each of her first three championship meets and moved to the top of the podium in her senior year.
Ortega, Lawrence, and Simmons backed up their relay championship with A-final place-winning finishes in the 50-yard freestyle. Ortega was third, Lawrence was fourth, and Simmons was sixth.
Amy Storti finished sixth in the finals of the 500-yard freestyle in 6:51.69. Emily Cooper, Jessica Boeheim, and Asa Cade placed in the B-finals of the 500 free.
