Second-Place Finish For Women's Swimming At NEAC Meet
The Wells College women's swimming team rallied on the final day of the North Eastern Athletic Conference Championship meet and claimed second place in the team standings. Sunday's final session saw Wells claim two all-conference finishes in individual events as well as the final relay, which boosted Wells to second place.
The Express entered the final relay tied with Cedar Crest in team points with 440. Wells placed second in the A Finals as Caitlin Lawrence, Shannon Simmons, Courtney Cloutier, and Callia Ortega swam 4:13.04 and earned 22 team points. The B Finals saw Wells take eighth place overall as Emily Cooper, Jess Boeheim, Kaylen Furr, and Amy Storti swam 4:48.76 and beat the B Final relay from Cedar Crest. The Wells relays combined to score 36 points and Cedar Crest's relays earned 30.
The final team standings had Cazenovia in first (595), Wells in second (476), Cedar Crest (470), SUNY Cobleskill (229), and Gallaudet (213).
The second-place finish is the best finish at the NEAC meet for the women's swimming team since finishing second in 2016. Wells won the team championship in 2012, 2013, and 2014. Cazenovia has won the last five NEAC championships.
Other all-conference performances were turned in by Courtney Cloutier in the 200-yard butterfly with a second-place finish in 2:32.74. Cloutier already ranked fourth in the Wells top-10 in that event. She earned seven all-conference finishes over the course of the championship meet on four relays and three individual events (200 IM, 400 IM, 200 fly).
Callia Ortega placed second in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:00.99. It was her seventh all-conference finish of the championship meet on four relays and three individual events (100 free, 50 free, 100 back).
Shannon Simmons placed fifth in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:44.52 and totaled four all-conference finishes on relays. Caitlin Lawrence was fifth in the 100-yard freestyle on Sunday in 1:04.98. She was on four all-conference relays during the championships.
Bella George was fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke in 3:20.17 and sixth in the 100-yard individual medley in 1:27.63. Kaylen Furr was sixth in the 100 free in 1:13.67.
In addition to a second-place finish at the NEAC Championships, Wells won five dual meets during the 2018-19 season.
