Baseball Team Splits Two Games Against Elmira

The Wells College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Elmira College on Tuesday, March 28 at the Wells Turf Field. The Express won the opening game by a score of 3-0, and Elmira answered with a 16-1 victory in the second game.

Wells stands at 3-9 on the season and Elmira is 4-4. The Express returns to action Saturday with home games against Penn College. These will be the first North Eastern Athletic Conference games of the year for Wells. The doubleheader on Saturday begins at 2 p.m. Please note that is a time change from the originally scheduled start time.

Wells 3, Elmira 0

Wells scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the first inning and made them stand up with strong pitching and defense over the rest of the game. The first-inning rally included an RBI double from Dylan Nolan, who later came in to score on a ground out by Tanner Dunkel.

Brandon Shirley started on the mound for Wells and worked six effective innings. He had 10 strikeouts and allowed only one hit, which came in the top of the sixth inning. Greyson Avots came in and earned the save with two strikeouts in the seventh inning.

Elmira 16, Wells 1

The visitors pounded out 13 hits and scored 16 runs. Wells scored in the bottom of the fourth when Dylan Nolan doubled, stole third, and scored on an RBI single from KeAndre Sadler. Nolan and A.J. Nesci had two hits each for Wells. Five pitchers worked for Wells in the game. Jared Strait took the loss, and fell to 1-2 on the year.
