Compres, Express Rally Late for 9-7 Comeback Victory Over SUNY Poly in Series Finale

AURORA - The Express got off to a slow start against SUNY Poly on Sunday, allowing 3 Wildcat runners to cross the plate before even having a base runner of their own. It was then that the sun came out for the first time all weekend in the fifth inning, and as the light shone down on the Wells College Turf Complex, the Express bats came out too, propelling the Wells College Baseball squad to a 9-7 comeback win in game 3 of the weekend series.

The first hints of a Wells offensive resurgence surge came in the final moments of the third inning when reigning AMCC Player of the Week Jacobi James hit a rocket down the right field line. The ball was snared by Wildcat right fielder Brody Liddy on a full extension catch that presented just one of many spectacular defensive plays by both teams during the game. Had James' hit found the turf, it would have brought two Wells runs along with it, but the Wildcats' lead remained due to Liddy's catch.

If James' liner was the Express knocking on the door, then the fifth inning is when Alan Compres and the Wells offense blew it wide open.

Trailing 4-1 entering the bottom of the fifth, the Express found their footing after logging 2 runs on 3 hits before recording a single out in the frame. The rally was started by the sophomore Compres, who led off the inning with 1 of his 3 hits – a double that landed inches away from the left field fence. The Express added 2 more runs and 2 more hits to complete a 4-run 5-hit inning, taking a 5-4 lead behind some stellar batting from Chris Mclean and Zack Odum.

Mason Smith was on the bump for the Express and managed to find his footing after a shaky start, only allowing 1 more run after the early scoring from SUNY Poly and picking up his 2nd win of the season in the process.

The Wells offense cushioned their lead in the sixth and seventh innings, scoring 2 runs in each frame while simultaneously shutting out the Wildcat offense.

Senior second baseman Max Odum hit 1 of his 2 sacrifice flies in the sixth, extending the lead to 3 at 7-4.

Senior slugger Aaron Izquierdo put the finishing touches on an amazing offensive performance for the Express, mashing a solo home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the seventh. Izquierdo picked up where he left off yesterday, logging another multi-hit game with 2 extra-base knocks, finishing with 2 hits and 1 RBI.

Junior closer Cameron Haymon got the save and the Express improved to 4-3 on the season.

Compres came up huge in the win for Wells, going 3 for 4 with 2 doubles, 2 rbi, and 2 runs scored. Compres has had a scorching hot start to the season, accruing 6 hits in 7 at bats for the Express, good for a .857 average in what is so far a small sample size for the sophomore.

Zack Odum also swiped two bases, tying him with his brother Max at the top of the AMCC with 5 on the season.

The Express will welcome Hobart to town on Wednesday for a midweek matchup before heading south for spring training.
