Campi, Express Youth Propel Wells Baseball to Walk-Off Glory in Weekend Sweep of Greensburg

AURORA, NY - The Express hosted their first home AMCC series on Saturday against Ptt. - Greensburg, and what a series it was. Wells baseball needed to bounce back big after their Monday losses to Hilbert. On a clear day at the Wells College Turf, the Express righted the ship in a major way, sweeping the Bobcats and winning by scores of 11-4 and 4-3, including an amazing walk-off after back-to-back doubles by Wells sluggers James Camacho and AJ Campi

The series was filled to the brim with amazing moments and showings by lots of Express underclassmen, as they utilized 5 sophomore pitchers over the 2-game set and also featured 5 sophomores in their lineup during the matchups.

Despite the sea of sophomores the Express put forth on Saturday, it was the first year AJ Campi who launched a rocket deep into left field during the bottom of the 9th to walk-off the Bobcats and give Wells the 4-3 game 2 victory.

The Express had some amazing outings throughout the the day, as both their offense and defense were in great form.

Mike Nascimento started the day off in poweful fashion for the Express, as he took the bump in game 1 and began the series with 4-straight strikeouts. Nascimento went 5 innings, allowing just 3 hits and 2 runs, giving the Express offense plenty of time to get going and get out to a 10-2 lead by the end of the 5th.

Fellow sophomore Zach Young was the architect behind the Express' 11-run performance in game 1. The Binghamton, NY native went 3-for-4 with 1 RBI and 3 runs scored, falling just a home run short of the cycle in an amazing outing that sparked the Express offense and allowed them to get back to their productive ways.

After an 11-run game 1, the Express bats fell quiet to start the second game.

Luckily for the Wells batsmen, they had yet another sophomore stud in Zander Johnson on the mound for game 2. Johnson had a solid game, only allowing 2 runs in his 6-inning start. Johnson also sat down a plethora of Bobcat batters to the tune of 8 strikeouts. Johnson's impressive work kept the game close while the Wells bats heated up.

After getting shut out for the first 6 frames. The Express offense came roaring back to life, notching a 3 run 7th inning that was powered by yet another amazing at-bat from Zach Young. With 2 outs in the 7th, Young launched a double down the left field line to score 2 Express baserunners and give the home team a 3-2 lead.

The Bobcats battled back and tied the game up entering the bottom of the 9th.

In the final frame, it would only take 2 Express at-bats to produce the winning run.

James Camacho, another sophomore, pinch hit for the Express to lead off the bottom of the 9th. After laying dormant all day, Camacho made his presence known, roping a double into deep left field to set up the game-winning run at second base with 0 outs in the inning.

After all the sophomore production throughout the day, it was Express first year AJ Campi who ended the proceedings, following Camacho's lead by launching another ball deep into left field, scoring pinch runner Justin Colindres for the game-winning run.

The Express moved to 14-8 on the season, and improved to 2-2 in the conference, picking up their debut AMCC victories in explosive fashion to right the ship heading into the heart of AMCC play.

The Express travel to Hobart on Monday for a special eclipse-day meeting with the Statesmen, that game will take place at 4:00.
