Opening Day Win for Baseball, Honoring Jared Strait

Wells College Baseball opened up the 2024 season with a 16-2 win Wednesday against the Defenders of Clarks Summit University. It was a bitter sweet day for the Express as they paid tribute to a fallen teammate and asssistant coach, Jared Strait. Part of the Opening Day Ceremony was capped off by a moving statement written by former player and now assistant coach Joe Horne followed by a moment of silence in rememberence of Jared, his time spent at Wells College, and the legacy that he leaves.

The starting pitcher for the Express was Zander Johnson, who started dealing as soon has he took the mound.  Johnson went 5 and 2/3 inning, throwing 92 pitches with 55 of them strikes.  Johnson had four strong strike outs, giving up two runs on four hits after facing 23 batters. Also strong on defense for the Express was 3rd baseman Jacobi James, ranging for a team high five assists on putouts of the Defenders.

Wells had a hot bat up at the plate, scoring 16 runs on 17 hits. Leading the way for Wells was centerfielder Zach Odum, who went 3-5 with a double and 6 RBIs.  The Express also had two triples, one by 2nd baseman Max Odum and the other hit by leftfielder Chris Mclean.  Catcher Aaron Izquierdo had two stolen bases for Wells.

The Express are on the road next traveling down to Washtington, D.C. to face Elmira College on Friday February, 23rd and SUNY Canton in a double header February, 24th.
