Baseball Takes Two from SUNY Canton in Washington DC

Washington, DC- Wells College Baseball was back in action Saturday for the second day at Gallaudet University for a pair of non-conferece games versus the Roos of SUNY Canton.  The Express won both games, taking their season recored to 3-1, going 2-1 for the road trip. Notable players for Wells who are on the leaderboard in the AMCC Conference Leaders: Jacobi James is 4th in batting average hitting .529, followed by teammate Zack Odum with a .500 average.  Z. Odum leads the conference with 10 RBIs, with James coming in with 7 putting him in 4th in the standings.

Game 1: Wells 7, SUNY Canton 6

Game 1 of the double header proved to be a nail biter as the Roos got on the board first in the 2nd inning, going up two runs off of a couple of singles. The Express doubled that output in the bottom of the 2nd with four runs of their own, getting the first two batters on base off walks.  Some timely hitting for the Express by seniors Zac Legaretta with a sacrifice fly and Zack Odum's 2RBI single moved the runners around, along with singles by James Comacho and AJ Campi putting Wells up 4-2. The Roos would answer back and tie the game in the 4th inning, but the Express took the lead back in the bottom of the 4th with a Jacobi James single, brining home senior Max Odum. The 6th inning had the Express scoring two more runs off an errant throw to 1st base, scoring M.Odum and Z.Odum, who had both walked and had two stolen bases each to put them in scoring position. Junior pitcher Cameron Hayman came in to face seven batters for a two inning hold for the Express, striking out two batters and only allowing one hit to finish the game.  The winning pitcher for Wells was Jonathan Haines.

Game 2: Wells 4, SUNY Canton 1

The second game of the double header betwen the Roos of SUNY Canton and the Express of Wells College was a good pitching duel holding, at 1-1 until Wells took the lead in the bottom of the 7th inning.  Sophomore pitcher Mason Smith was dealing, allowing just three hits in the first two innings.  The Roos struck first, scoring off a wild pitch from Smith. The Express answered back in the 5th inning off of a timely walk from Mark Maybee, who scored on an throwing error. With the game tied 1-1, the big bats came up in the bottom of the 7th inning for Wells.  The Express started with a walk from Max Odum, who was moved over to 2nd with a single from brother Zack Odum. A giant triple from Jacobi James scored both ruunners, putting the Express in the driving seat.  Another RBI single from senior Aaron Izquierdo, scored James putting the Express up for good.  Saving the game for Wells was Zac Legaretta, holding strong for the Express on the mound for two innings allowing just one hit and no runs was Ethan Zimmerman for some relief work.
