Wells Baseball Drops Spring Break Opener in Late-Night Contest vs Rivier

The Express baseball team finally got their spring break trip to Myrtle Beach underway, taking on Rivier under the lights at the Ripken Experience on Saturday night. A stormy day caused game 1 between the two teams to be postponed, but the skies cleared up later in the day, allowing the Raiders and Express to finally take the field for a late-night matchup that began around 9:00 PM and finished around 12:15 AM the next morning. After fighting through the night, the Wells Baseball squad dropped the first game of the trip in an 8-0 loss to the Raiders.

The two squads started off in a deadlock, shutting each other down until eventually the Raiders broke through in the middle stages of the game as they plated at least 1 run in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th inning to take a 5-0 lead.

The Express had their chances, but couldn't take advantage of stolen bases from Max OdumZack Odum, and Chris Mclean, who were stranded due to untimely outs from the Wells offense.

Wells was particularly unlucky in the 4th inning, as they loaded the bases up on 3 consecutive walks to begin the frame, but couldn't muster up any runs after hitting into a poorly timed double-play to lose their offensive momentum.

Jonathan Haines was the starter for the Express, and struck out 8 batters in 4 innings of work. Allowing 3 runs but keeping the Wells squad within striking distance.

The Odum brothers also used their stolen bases to stay towards the top of the AMCC in steals, with Zack Odum currently ranking 2nd in the conference with 7 steals and his brother Max Odum ranking right behind him in 3rd with 6 steals of his own.

The Express return to the Ripken Experience on Monday as they take on Geneva in a doubleheader beginning at 9:00 AM.

All games can be streamed with a subscription on the Ripken Experience website.
