Express Stumble in Myrtle, Lose Two Close Battles Against Geneva

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Express baseball squad let Geneva get away with 2 close wins in 2 very tightly contested matchups down at the Ripken Experience on Monday.

After powering their way to a 6-3 lead through 2 innings, Wells saw Geneva creep back into the matchup, as the Golden Tornadoes played a very scrappy brand of baseball to knot the score at 6 apiece going into the 6th. In the 6th frame, Express slugger Aaron Izquierdo shot one right back up the middle to score fellow senior Max Odum and deliver Wells a 7-6 lead.

The Golden Tornadoes fought back though, and managed to usurp the Express momentum, taking their own 8-7 lead and also game 1 in the process. As they completed the comeback in a 7-inning slugfest.

Game 2 was also neck and neck throughout. After Geneva took an early 4-0 lead, it was the Express' turn to mount a comeback. Sophomore Lance Phillips opened the scoring for Wells, knocking in Max Odum on a sacrifice fly to center field. First year AJ Campi cut the deficit to 1 after scorching a double to left field plating Zack Odum and Jacobi James. The score sat at 4-3 after 3 innings, but the Express bats would get cold and they'd run out of juice as the afternoon went on, dropping game 2 by a score of 5-3.

For the Express, Zach Young had a great showing in game 1, going 3-for-4 and contributing a run in that explosive second inning.

Zack Odum also got it done for Wells, batting 4-for-7 over both games with an RBI and 3 runs scored.

The Express now have two batters hitting over .400 in stellar sophomore Jacobi James and the aforementioned Zack Odum, both of whom are batting .421 through 10 games.

Wells will look to regroup and put it all together when they return to the Ripken Experience tomorrow for a rematch with Clarks Summit.

The Express and Defenders met in the season opener at the Wells College Turf Complex, with the boys from Aurora securing victory by a count of 16-2. They'll look to repeat that performance and get back on track as they continue their spring break in Myrtle Beach.
