Women's Swimming Splits on Senior Day

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College women's swimming program split Saturday's swim meet, collecting a victory over Pitt.-Bradford while drawing a defeat against NCAA Division II Mansfield. The Express moved to 5-6 on the year by defeating the Panthers by a 53-36 score and losing to the Mountaineers 61-34.

Despite not placing first in any event on the afternoon, Wells collected numerous second and third place finishes. Senior Olive Touron (Cato, N.Y.), the lone senior student-athlete on the women's swimming team from Wells, notched a second place finish in the 50 Yard Freestyle, turning in a time of 27.99. Touron also recorded a strong time of 1:03.53 in the 100 Yard Freestyle later in the afternoon.

Touron, a four-year member of the program, earned her team's Rookie of the Year selection in 2011-12. As an individual and as part of relay foursomes, Touron boasts an impressive 20 All-Conference selections. Her first place finish in the 500 Yard Freestyle (5:49.01) at the 2012 NEAC Championship earned her First Team All-Conference honors.

She has also been a key component of the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, 800 Yard Freestyle Relay and the 200 Yard Medley Relay as her foursomes have posted the fastest times in team history.

Freshman Kaitlyn Schwend (San Marcos, Calif.) posted a second place finish in the 100 Yard Butterfly with a time of 1:06.31, placing only .21 seconds behind the first place finisher from Pitt.-Bradford. She was able to eclipse her personal best in the event, once again recording the third-fastest time in the event and trails only Jennifer Ingold (1:03.76) and Julie Wittenzellner '08 (1:06.13).

Sophomore Amelia Flint (Bath, N.Y.) and freshman Samantha Hall (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) finished second and third, respectively, in the 200 Yard Freestyle with times of 2:19.41 and 2:26.92. Schwend and sophomore Gina Ross-Detro (Geneva, N.Y.) placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 200 Yard Individual Medley.

Junior Nina Daniels (Pittsford, N.Y.) picked up a second place finish in the 500 Yard Freestyle (6:20.96), trailing the leader from Mansfield by 15 seconds.

Rounding out the day's top performances, Ross-Detro placed second for Wells in the 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:22.64) while freshman Samantha Roll (Phelps, N.Y.) earned third for the Express with a time of 1:34.23.

The Express return to action Saturday, Jan. 24 as they travel to the Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, N.Y. for a meet against the host Herons and Cazenovia College at 1 p.m.
