Women’s Volleyball Team Receives Team Academic Award

LEXINGTON, Ky.  – The Wells College women's volleyball team earned the 2020-21 Team Academic Award as one of nearly 1,300 combined collegiate and high school teams presented by the United States Marine Corps (USMC) and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and announced July 19.

In addition, Wells College helped set a USMC-AVCA all-time record for NCAA Division III schools at 233.

"Even though teams might not have played during their usual season or may not have competed at all during the past year, coaches still found ways to lead their players to academic excellence." said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. "

This is a testament to the important role volleyball coaches play in their players success both on and off the court."

The roster of the 2020-21 Wells College women's volleyball team is comprised of:

Daisha Cook (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Makenzie Drown (Guilford, N.Y.), Lauren Frias Alexis (Bronx, N.Y.), Morgan Adams (Waverly, N.Y.), Isabella Ciancio (Clinton, N.Y.), Kayla Filiatrault (Lacona, N.Y.), Leah Gregory (Afton, N.Y.), Maritza Scharoun (Bronx, N.Y.) and Haley Van Luven (Weedsport, N.Y.). The 2020-21 team was coached by Mark Lucas and assisted by Jim Nichols.

The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors volleyball collegiate and high school teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale or 4.10 on a 5.0 scale.
