Women's soccer falls short against Hartwick

The Wells College women's soccer team opened the home portion of its 2016 schedule with a 4-0 loss to visiting Hartwick College on Wednesday, Sept. 7. Wells is 2-1-0 on the season and Hartwick is 3-0-0.

Wells started the year with two straight wins, its first time achieving that mark since 2006, before the winning streak came to an end in this contest.

Hartwick held a 1-0 lead at halftime. The best scoring chances for the Express came late in the first half, when a driven shot by Amber Welsh from 20 yards out went wide of the right post. In the final minute of the half, a direct kick from 28 yards out was curled around the defensive wall by Mackenzie Maloney but saved by the Hartwick goalkeeper on one bounce.

The Hawks scored three goals in a span of 11 minutes in the second half to secure the result.

Wells goalkeeper Karlie Maloney made her debut as a keeper over the game's final 25 minutes and made three saves. Maloney also confidently intercepted and handled several Hartwick crosses into the penalty area.
