Men's Soccer Cruises Past Penn State Berks

The Wells College men's soccer team came through with a comprehensive performance and earned a 4-1 victory over Penn State Berks on Saturday, Oct. 20 at the Wells Turf Field.

The Express broke the North Eastern Athletic Conference match open with three second-half goals and pulled into a tie for eighth place in the conference standings with a 3-6-0 NEAC record. Penn State Berks and Gallaudet University are also 3-6-0 in the NEAC through nine conference matches.

The game's opening goal came in the 22nd minute. A long pass from the defensive side of midfield sent Junger Vargas in against a Berks defender and the oncoming goalkeeper. The players congregated near the top of the box, where Vargas won the ball and shot into the vacated net.

In the second half, Wells scored three goals in a span of 14 minutes.

Christian Garavito scored for Wells after Justin Butler's long-range shot was parried by the Berks keeper. Garavito collected the rebound and scored in the 53rd minute.

Four minutes later, Wells went ahead 3-0 on the second goal of the match for Vargas. A square pass along the top of the penalty area from Mekhi Edge-Wallace freed up Vargas whose rifled shot went in off of the underside of the crossbar.

Wells capped its scoring in the 67th minute. Garavito sent a pass ahead for Vargas, who then played a short pass at the left post to Edge-Wallace for the goal.

Wells goalkeeper Colton Jaquith made seven saves. The only goal Wells conceded came off of a Penn State Berks corner kick with 12:50 remaining.

Wells is back on the field Sunday, Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. against Penn College.
