WELLS WOMENS SOCCER FALLS TO POTSDAM

(Potsdam, N.Y.)─  The Wells College women's soccer team fell 3-0 to the SUNY Potsdam Bears in non-conference action Tuesday evening in Potsdam, N.Y. Courtney Poirier paced the Bears with one goal and one assist. Megan Lawrence (Scipio Center, N.Y./Cayuga Community College) led the Wells Express with three saves in net. With the loss the Express fall to 0-2, while Potsdam remains undefeated at 3-0.

The Bears would jump on the board early as Lawrence would make the initial save on a cross in the box  but the rebound would fall to Heather Johnson who tucked the ball into the goal giving the Bears a 1-0 lead at 17:13. The score would hold at 1-0 heading into the break as Wells allowed just one other shot on goal the remainder of the first half.

The Express continued to play exceptional defense in the second half but Potsdam would take advantage of the few opportunities they had. Jess Mehm would score on feed from Poirier in the 65th minute in what would be the first shot on goal in the half for Potsdam. The third and final, back breaking, goal from Potsdam would come at 77:33 as Potsdam sent a corner kick into the box that found the feet of Poirier who quickly put the shot into the back of the goal for a 3-0 lead.

All together the Express allowed six shots on goal, but the Potsdam defense proved to be too much as they would hold the Express to four shots, two on goal, the entire game.

The Express return to action on Saturday, September 11 at 1:30 p.m. against Penn. St. Berks in Aurora, N.Y.
