Late Goal Stuns Women's Soccer At Alfred, 1-0

ALFRED, N.Y. – Only 55 seconds away from overtime, the Wells College women's soccer team surrendered a late goal as the host Saxons of Alfred University secured a 1-0 victory on Sunday. With the loss, Wells drops to 0-4 overall on the year while Alfred snaps a 14-game winless streak that dates back to last season.

Alfred poured on the shots in the first half of play, boasting a 12-0 advantage at halftime. The Express, however, hung in the game and kept the Saxons off the scoresheet through the first 89 minutes of action. A free kick by Emily Wright with one minute remaining, however, bounced over the Wells defense and caught the foot of Lauren Wyant for the only goal of the game.

On the day, the Saxons held the 21-to-5 advantage in shots and a 6-to-4 edge in corner kicks. Wells goalkeeper Quinn Doubet (Virgil, N.Y.) stood tall, however, turning aside 12-of-13 shots to keep the Express in contention. Sammy Jo Shanahan earned the win for Alfred, making a single save in 90 minutes.

The Express welcome Medaille College to the South Athletic Field this Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 5:15 p.m.
