Women's Volleyball Starts Off Season With Two Road Wins

Wells College women's volleyball was in action for the first time this season Saturday afternoon at a tri-match hosted by SUNY Delhi.

Their first match was against the Husson University Eagles and they jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first set. Miah Williamson and newcomer Elise Peacock helped the Express increase their lead when they both tallied kills in the first set. A late run by Husson was too little too late and Wells won the first set, 25-17.

In the second set, the Express fell behind early 9-3. Alycia Wilson stopped the Eagles run with a kill, but Husson answered right back. Wells could never find any momentum in the second set and fell 25-12. Unfortunately for Wells, the third set looked very similar to the second and the Express found themselves down 2-1.

In the fourth set, Miah Williamson set the tone early with two quick kills. The Express were able to build a 10-5 lead thanks to some errors on the side of Husson. First-year student Ellie Te landed a few kills of her own and Taelor Cid dropped in a couple of services aces to help the Express force a fifth set.

Wells jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the deciding set forcing a timeout by the Eagles. Service aces from Sarina Soto and Taylor Cid finished off the Eagles in 5 sets.

Up next for the Express was their host for the day, the SUNY Delhi Broncos. In their sixth set of the day, Wells hung with the Broncos for the first half of the set. Eventually, Delhi would go on an 8-point run that helped them secure the first set over the Express, 25-19.

Neither team was able to take a commanding lead in the second set. It came down to blocks by Elise Peacock with Miah Williamson followed by a kill from Ellie Te, and Brianah Dawson finished the set off with a service ace. The Express won 25-20.

The Express would win two sets in a row thanks to multiple service aces from Brian Dawson and Sarina Soto.

In the fourth set, Ellie Te helped the Express put away the Broncos with her serves and Mya Chickering sent home some kills to secure the 3-1 win.

Women's volleyball will head to SUNY Poly on Tuesday for another non-conference matchup.
