2021 Wells Express Women's Soccer Season Recap

2021 Wells Express Women's Soccer Season Recap

The Express women's soccer team was back in full swing this season!

Completing a full season of 15 games with almost half of them being on the road, the Express looked to recover from the pandemic with an exciting fall season.

"What will stick with me most about this group is how committed they were. Year one is all about culture building, and we were never concerned with comparing ourselves to others. Their goals were to maximize who they were as individual players and as a team" Coach Patrick Arancio.

The Express started the season on a bit of a losing streak dropping 3 home games and 2 road games to various opponents. No matter the situation, however, our women's soccer team continued to play hard and work tirelessly to create offensive chances for themselves. They were however able to secure their first victory of the season when Gallaudet came to town. In one of the most exciting games of the season, the Express fell behind to Gallaudet when in the 61st minute of the play they fell behind 1-0. On our home turf, we continued to fight through the defense, and thanks to Mackenzie Powers the Express was able to tie it up at 1 in the 89th minute sending it to overtime. It didn't take long once we were into overtime for Lydia Thomas to find the back of the net securing the first win of the season for The Wells College Express.

Our women's soccer team finished the season with an overall record of 1-14 with only the overtime win over Gallaudet. "We look forward to the opportunity to get better. This is a team on the come up, we have some talented footballers coming back and a recruiting class to be excited about. There are no freebies in the United East and we will be ready for that challenge." Coach Patrick Arancio.

A bright spot on the season was Jennifer McCumber. As the goalkeeper for the Express, she played an integral part in the season. As of November 1st, she is 2nd in the nation in total saves (202) and 4th in the nation in saves per game (14.43). Multiple times throughout the season she led the nation, regardless of division (I/II/ or III) in saves per game. Mackenzie Powers, Lydia Thomas, and Ericka Arancio lead the team with 1 goal each. Ericka Arancio lead the team in points with 3.

There are 5 seniors on this year's team, Abby Smith, Alexis Huff, Mackenzie Powers, Hayley Martin, and Jennifer McCumber. Thank you all for your dedication to the Wells College Women's Soccer program over the years!

Express women's soccer will return in 2022!
