Allen and Stoops Reach Milestones in Win at Polytech

In the lone NEAC volleyball game of the night, the visiting Express rallied against SUNY Polytechnic Institute to take a five-set win in a back-and-forth affair on Thursday, Oct. 10. Two Wells players hit milestones in the contest with Jordan Stoops recording her 1,000th career assist and Jackie Allen registering her 1,000th dig.

Stoops finished the match with 26 assists to bring her career total to 1,020; while Allen collected 21 digs against Poly to bring her career dig total to 1,015. In addition to the milestones, Allen set a single match program record for kills with 29 - breaking the previous record of 27 - after finishing with a hitting percentage of .333.

After dropping the first set by a 21-25 score, Wells rallied to take the next two sets and a 2-1 match lead with set wins of 25-22 and 25-19, respectively. Poly answered and took a close fourth set at 22-25 that set the stage for a fifth and deciding set.

The Express were focused in the last set of the day and never trailed. Wells built an early lead before the teams switched sides with a three-point cushion at 6-3. The teams were tied at 7-7 before switching ends and the last point before the switch and the first point after the switch both went to Wells and appeared to be the impetus to victory with the Express claiming eight of the final 11 points to seal the match with a final 15-10 fifth-set victory.

The contest gave each of the 12 NEAC team four conference games in the standings with the Express now tied for second in the conference with a 3-1 record. Both Wells and Poly entered the contest at 2-1.

Current NEAC Defensive Volleyball Player of the Week Maritza Scharoun finished the night with seven blocks (one solo) as she moved to No. 1 in the NEAC in block assists with 51.

Gabby Rivera led the team in digs with 23 and was aided by teammates Nanako Otsuka (14), Lorissa Parks (11) and Stoops (14) in that category. Parks finished second to Stoops on the night in assists with a solid 20.

The Express next heads to Manhiem, Pa. on Saturday, Oct. 12 to face a pair of Penn State teams in Harrisburg and Abington. Penn State-Harrisburg is currently tied with the Express for second place in the NEAC at 3-1, while Penn State Abington is tied-fifth in the NEAC at 2-2.
