2021 Wells Express Men's Soccer Season Recap

2021 Wells Express Men's Soccer Season Recap

The Wells Express men's soccer team was one of our many fall teams excited to get back on the field in 2021.

The Express had about the same win percentage at home as they did on the road while playing 9 home games and 8 road games on the season.

"Heading into the season we stressed every practice the importance of communication and energy. We weren't the largest team roster wise so we could use our cohesiveness as an advantage for sure." Coach Jim McIntyre

The season kicked off September 1st for the Express as they visited Nazareth College. September proved to be a tough month for our men's soccer team as they finished the month with a record of 0-9. As they put their first month behind them, the Express went on to host Hilbert College on October 1st on the Wells College turf. Nathan Soliman's pair of assists led the way for the Express. Soliman assisted on Quinten Battle's game-winner in the first half and then set up Shane Syms in the second to secure the win. Sandwiched between those goals was a goal by Roman Martinez, who scored in the first half from a feed from Justin Butler to make it a 2-0 game. Wells goalkeeper Colton Jaquith, who led the nation in D-III saves, outdueled his counterpart with a half-dozen saves to earn his first clean sheet of the season. Alimar Ramirez had a team-best four shots to lead the offensive attack with a pair finding the net. The Express outshot the Hawks by a 19-9 margin. This was the first and only win of the season for the Express until they visited SUNY Morrisville on October 19th. It didn't take long for the Express to find the back of the net in this game when in the 7th minute Justin Butler scored with the assist from Roman Matinez. Soon after that, in the 28th minute of play, Justin Butler scored his second goal of the game (unassisted) giving the Express a 2-0 lead that held until halftime. The second half brought a defensive struggle with the Mustangs able to score in the 69th minute making it only a 1 goal lead with only 20 minutes left. Thanks to some key saves by the Express keeper, Wells College secured the victory by a score of 2-1 on the road.

Justin Butler leads the Express with 4 goals and 9 points on the season. Shane Syms followed behind with 4 points and 2 goals.

The Express went on to finish the season with an overall record of 2-15. "I think this year was a good learning experience for a lot of our team. We have a strong core coming back with experience so we are really looking forward to next season and an off-season full of improving." Head Coach Jim McIntyre.

There were 5 seniors on the Express squad this year, Colton Jaquith, Shane Syms, Quentin Battle, Jimmy Stover, and Justin Butler. Thank you all for your dedication to the Wells College Men's Soccer program over the years!
