Women's Volleyball Edged By Elmira in Five Sets

The Wells College volleyball team dropped a five-set match at Elmira College on Thursday, Oct. 5. Set scores were 25-22, 15-25, 21-25, 25-19, 17-15 as the Soaring Eagles took the first set, and then rallied to claim the fourth set and decisive fifth set in extra points. Wells is 11-9 on the season and Elmira is 11-8.

Rachel Anderson had a career-high 22 kills for Wells with a .372 hitting percentage, and eight block assists. Jackie Allen added 11 kills and Eliza Schwab had 36 assists.

Amanda Springer had one solo block and three block assists and Lakshmi Martin had six block assists.

Elmira used a five-point run in the first set to build a 16-11 lead and went on to a 25-22 win.

In the second set, Wells won 12 of the final 14 points as the Express surged from a 13-13 tie to win 25-15. Anderson had three kills and Elmira made seven errors in the decisive run.

The third set saw Wells win the last four points of the set, all on hitting errors from Elmira, to break a 21-21 tie and win 25-21.

Elmira used a 7-1 run in the fourth set to build an 18-10 lead. Wells rallied to pull within 21-19, but Elmira won the last four points to force a fifth set.

In the decisive set, Wells went ahead 12-5, and had match points at 14-13 and 15-14, but Elmira took the set 17-15.

Wells is back in action Saturday, Oct. 7 with home games at noon against Penn College and a 4 p.m. match against Medaille College. Medaille and Penn College will play at 2 p.m. All three matches will be at the Schwartz Athletic Center on the Wells campus.
