Pilgrim's Header Lifts Men’s Soccer To 1-0 NEAC Victory

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – Freshman Jack Pilgrim (North Kingstown, R.I.) headed home the game-winning goal with only 3:41 remaining in regulation time, lifting the Wells College men's soccer team to a crucial 1-0 North Eastern Athletic Conference victory over Bryn Athyn College on Saturday. Wells improves to 10-6 overall on the year (7-3 NEAC) while Bryn Athyn falls to 7-8-1 on the season (3-6-1 NEAC).

With time ticking down in the second half, sophomore Benjamen Schanbacher (Spencer, N.Y.) sent a service toward the top of the box. In heavy traffic, Pilgrim was able to head the ball past Bryn Athyn goalkeeper Ryan Weinkopff, who came way out of the goal mouth trying to play the ball. With the strike, Pilgrim has tied the single-season program record for goals scored in a season with nine.

Wells controlled the majority of the first half, firing five shots in the opening 45 minutes while limiting the host Lions to only one shot taken. In the second half, Bryn Athyn held a slight edge in shots taken (5-to-4) but the Express were granted five corner kicks in the game's final stanza.

Express backstop Owen May (Warsaw, N.Y.) picked up his fourth shutout of the year, turning aside all two shots faced. Weinkopff allowed one goal on three shots, drawing the loss.

Wells returns to action this Sunday, Oct. 25 as they face-off against the Nittany Lions from Penn St.-Abington at 12 p.m. on the road.
