Baseball Team’s Win Streak Snapped after Split

The Wells College baseball team extended its win streak to three games before dropping the matinee matchup of a doubleheader with visiting Lancaster Bible College for a split on Tuesday, April 13.

Dylan Nolan (Brick, N.J.) homered twice in the opening game to lead the way in a 13-4 win. Wells carried the momentum into the second game after Max Odum (Elmira, N.Y.) homered to give Wells the lead after three innings, but the Chargers rallied to take the second game by a 6-1 score.

Game One

The Express needed just one inning of hot bats to take the first game. After a seven-run second inning put Wells in front 7-0, Lancaster got a pair of runs in each of the next two innings. Wells responded with a six-run sixth inning to complete the scoring at 13-4.

Each of the two innings that Wells scored in featured 3-RBI homeruns by Nolan. The second inning scoring started with an Orlando Martinez III (Carthage, N.Y.) RBI-single that scored Jordan VanHerpe (Liverpool, N.Y.). Aaron Izquierdo (Palisades Park, N.J.) then belted a double to make it a 3-0 game. Ryan Foody (Tully, N.Y.) followed Izquierdo with a 2-RBI double of his own for a 4-0 lead before Nolan's homer turned out to be the game winning hit.

In the sixth, Izquierdo scored VanHerpe for an 8-4 lead. Max Odum had a 2-RBI double for a 10-4 advantage before Nolan rounded out the scoring with his second homerun and a 13-4 score.

Luke Eitner (N. Lehigh, Pa.) earned the win from the hill and went all seven innings allowing seven hits with three strikeouts.

Nolan and Izquierdo were the only multi-hitters for Wells with a pair apiece to account for four of the 10 hits. The duo also led the team in RBIs with Nolan collecting a half-dozen and Izquierdo netting three. VanHerpe finished with a pair of stolen bases.

Game Two

The second game started well for the Express after Max Odum gave Wells the lead after three inning with a solo blast. Only one hit separated the teams with the Chargers getting eight to Wells' seven, but the difference in the game was extra base hits with Lancaster Bible getting a pair of triples and a double.

Each team left a half-dozen stranded runners during the contest. Defensively, Wells executed a trio of double plays to end the inning for Lancaster in the second, fourth and fifth innings. Max Odum and Izquierdo were involved in all three.

In addition to Max Odum's homerun, the Express plated six other hits led by Derek Shea's (West Kingston, R.I.) three. Other hits came from Zack Odum (Elmira, N.Y.) VanHerpe and Eitner.

Jared Strait (Lansing, N.Y.) took the loss after throwing 6 1/3 innings with five strikeouts. Chase Sebastian (Eldred, Pa.) and Austin Jordan (Kane, Pa.) finished the contest from the hill.

Wells next hosts Penn College on Friday, April 16 in a conference doubleheader in a home-and-home series with the Express traveling to Penn on Saturday, April 17.
