Baseball Team Completes Road Outing with Win

The Wells College baseball team split a pair of road conference games against host Penn State Berks on Saturday, April 24.

The Express needed just a pair of runs in the fourth inning to take the matinee matchup by a 4-1 score. In the opening game, Wells trailed by a 3-1 score after three innings before taking a 4-3 lead. In both teams' last two at-bats, Berks outscored the Express 6-1 to take the contest by a 9-5 final.

Game 2

Jared Strait (Lansing, N.Y.) won his fourth game of the season after striking out nine and allowing six hits. Jack Field (Bethlehem, N.Y.) earned a save after completing the final inning in relief of Strait.

Aaron Izquierdo's (Palisades Park, N.J.) 2-RBI single in the fourth inning was all the scoring Wells would need after Dylan Nolan (Brick, N.J.) and Jordan VanHerpe (Liverpool, N.Y.) crossed the plate for a 2-0 lead. Zack Odum (Elmira, N.Y.) also had a 2-RBI single, but in the sixth inning, to give Wells some breathing room after Luke Eitner (N. Lehigh, Pa.) and Derek Shea (West Kingston, R.I.) scored the final Express runs.

The Express batters were hot with 10 hits in the game and were led by Zack Odum's three. In addition to Izquierdo, the other six hitters for Wells included VanHerpe, Shea, Justin Colindres (Clifton, N.J), Kevin Spaeth (Haddon Heights, N.J), Eitner and Ryan Foody (Tully, N.Y), with the latter two finishing with a double apiece.

Game 1

The highlight from the first game came when Joe Horne's (Hicksville, N.Y.) single scored Spaeth for a 4-3 lead for the Express after Wells had trailed by a 3-1 score. Berks responded with back-to-back three-run innings to take the contest.

Max Odum (Elmira, N.Y.) led the offense with two of the team's six hits. Of the other four hits that came from VanHerpe, Colindes, Horne and Nolan, only the latter's went for extra bases.

Shea, Spaeth and Horne each finished with an RBI. Max Odum and Nolan crossed the plate twice to account for the other Express runs.

Eitner took the loss from the hill after 4 1/3 innings of work after allowing seven hits with three strikeouts. Chase Sebastian (Eldred, Pa.) and Austin Jordan (Kane, Pa.) finished the game in relief.

The Express next host Penn State Abington on Wednesday, April 28.
