Women’s Volleyball Swept To Conclude Ithaca Invitational

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Wells College women's volleyball team dropped two consecutive contests to conclude the Ithaca Invitational, held Saturday and Sunday at the Ben Light Gymnasium. With the losses, the Express fall to 2-23 overall on the season following this weekend's non-conference games.

Against Sage College to open the day's matches, the Gators defeated the Express by set scores of 25-11, 25-8 and 25-17. Freshman outside hitter Katie Curtin (Cassville, N.Y.) led the team with seven kills to her credit while Taryn Heath (Homer, N.Y.) posted a team-best 14 assists. Defensively, libero Nicole Loeven (Pawling, N.Y.) recorded 13 digs. The Express finished their third set strongly, hitting a combined .091 by recording nine kills as opposed to only six errors in 33 total chances.

Despite charging out early in the first set, the Express eventually fell to the Bears of Potsdam State University by set scores of 25-22, 25-12 and 15-13. Gina Cairns (Delhi, N.Y.) led the Express attack with seven kills with Zakarra Butts (Cortland, N.Y.) finishing close behind with six kills and an .045 hitting percentage to lead the team. Heath posted 13 assists while Loeven again led the team with 13 digs to her credit. Curtin placed second with 12 digs. Leilani Yasutake (Germantown, N.Y.) also contributed a team-best two solo blocks in the game.

For Potsdam State, Anne Fildes led the Bears with nine kills. Jenna Blujus recorded three service aces and 34 assists while Jill Dye led all defensive players with 16 digs to her credit.
