Women’s Volleyball Scores Consecutive Road Victories

The Wells College women's volleyball team began October play the same way it ended play in September – with a win. The Express dominated host Elmira College by a 3-1 score after going up 2-0 and then closing the match in the fourth set to give Wells consecutive road victories in their last two outings.

The opening set began close with Wells holding onto a two-point lead early at 7-5, but nine consecutive points by the Express gave them a double-digit lead that they would carry until the end with a 25-14 first-set final.

Wells appeared in complete control of the second set with a comfortable 21-14 lead until Elmira made it 21-17 with three successive points. The Express responded by scoring the final four points for a 25-17 second-set victory.

Although Wells wasn't as sharp as it would have liked to be in the beginning of the third set, the Express trailed by 10 points after only a dozen points but did score 17 of the next 31. Although the Express outscored the Eagles by 17-14 after an 11-1 deficit, the double-digit hole was too deep to overcome before surrendering the third set by a 25-18 score.

The fourth set was by far the closest and most entertaining to those in attendance. With the score deadlocked at 21-21 late in the contest, the Express dug deep to score four of the game's final five points to seal the victory.

Jackie Allen led Wells on the attack with 18 kills and added a pair of aces. Jordan Stoops added a team-high 27 assists, while Gabby Rivera produced 22 digs. The tandem of Jazzmyne Williams and Maritza Scharoun combined for eight blocks on the night.

Wells will continue on the road at Houghton College this weekend Saturday, Oct. 5 with a pair of contests against Keuka and host Houghton.
