NEAC Presidents’ Council Statement Regarding Fall Sports

Given the current state of the pandemic and the most recent NCAA recommendations, the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Presidents' Council has unanimously determined that our eight member institutions will not participate in intercollegiate athletic competition during the Fall 2020 season. Wells College will work together in collaboration with the conference office and the NCAA to seek alternate opportunities to provide a meaningful student-athlete experience throughout the fall season.

Over the last few months, Wells College Athletics and the member institutions of the NEAC have worked tirelessly to plan for the upcoming fall semester while reviewing all return to play options for our student-athletes. As is the case in all that we do, the safety, health, and well-being of our students, staff, and greater campus communities is of the utmost importance in any path forward as we continue to navigate the impacts of COVID-19.

"While not unexpected, I recognize that this decision is a disappointing one for everyone, given the central role that athletic competition plays in the lives of our students. I have immense confidence in Michael Lindberg and his athletics staff that they will proceed this fall in keeping our student-athletes connected with their coaches and teammates in a safe and responsible way," said Wells College President Jonathan Gibralter.

Wells College and the NEAC Conference Office will continue to monitor the on-going developments of the pandemic and rely on NCAA recommendations, CDC guidelines, and federal, state, local and campus regulations as we develop all future plans for our student-athletes and any potential return to play with a decision regarding winter and spring competition to be made at a later date.

"We have worked very hard to find a safe and healthy way for our fall teams to compete this fall," Wells College Athletic Director Mike Lindberg said.

"Unfortunately given the data, science and recommendations from the NCAA, CDC, and other health agencies, we are not able to assure the safety and well-being of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and campus community by playing outside competition. The athletics department staff will be seeking meaningful and productive ways for our student-athletes to engage in their sports. While I share with our Wells family the deep disappointment we all feel at this moment, I am confident that this is the right decision," Lindberg added.

Wells College Athletics and members of the NEAC will continue to monitor updates from the NCAA with regard to legislation governing the playing and practice seasons. All updates will be posted on the Wells College Athletics website and its social media platforms.
