Express Softball Endures Pair of 7-0 Defeats vs Hilbert in AMCC Doubleheader Debut

AURORA, NY - The Express softball team welcomed the Hilbert College Hawks on Thursday afternoon for their first AMCC matchups of the season. In their AMCC debut, the Express struggled to find a rhythm on offense, leading to a pair of 7-0 defeats against a tough Hawks squad. Despite this, the Wells womens fought hard in game 2 but couldn't break through against an experience Hilbert side with more upperclassmen and veteran leadership.

The results put forth by the Express so far this season have showcased a very young squad that's still finding their footing, with almost all of their players undertaking their first or second seasons at the collegiate level. For a team with no juniors and only 2 seniors, the Express have displayed excellent fight in the face of adversity, and are simply just a bit of game experience away from figuring it out and putting it all together.

What hurt the Express in the field today were errors, as they gave the Hawks 9 free baserunners throughout the course of both games. Errors have been a problem early on in the season for Wells, but once again with all of the youth and new faces, the Express have been switching things around to figure out what formations work best for them. Given more time and experience at the collegiate level, this is a problem that will subside.

In game 2, it was a single bad frame that cost them the matchup. The Hawks managed a 6-run 3rd inning due in large part to 3 of those aforementioned 9 errors. Despite the crooked number, the Hawks only managed to score 7 runs in the second game, meaning that without the huge 3rd inning coming at the expense of some Express mistakes, Wells might have had a shot to take the second game.

Christa Koagel and Isabella Boissonnault managed to record hits in the second match, giving Wells the opportunity to push some across. However due to some unfortunately placed balls, and an unlucky double-play, the Express were kept off the scoreboard.

Koagel went the distance in game 2, only allowing 7 hits in 7 innings pitched and also recording 2 strikouts.

Wells will return for another home AMCC doubleheader on Saturday when they welcome Mount Aloysius to the turf. They'll be looking to shake off past mistakes and get back on track in a tough AMCC conference.
