Disastrous First Innings Doom Express vs SUNY Canton

AURORA, NY - Wednesday's doubleheader between the Express and SUNY Canton seemed at first glance like a one-sided affair, with the Kangaroos picking up two victories by scores of 13-5 and 12-4. However, after further inspection of both games, it's easy to point out what caused the Express' eventual downfall.

Wells missteps can be traced back to the opening moments of each game, where the Express allowed SUNY Canton to capture the early momentum via crooked numbers in the 1st inning of each matchup. Wells allowed 9 runs in the 1st frame of game 1, and then gave up 5 runs to begin the 2nd game, awarding the Kangaroos 14 total runs in the opening innings of each game. If you subtract these outliers, SUNY Canton's day seems a lot less dominant, with the Kangaroos scoring 11 total runs to Wells' 9.

Even though the Express were still outscored in the 2-game series even after subtracting the 1st inning anomalies, an 11-9 line gives a lot more tension down the stretch of each game.

Errors hurt the Express all night, as they piled up 9 total mistakes over the 2-games. Also going against the Express in the beginning of the 2 outings was a wave of wild pitches that allowed many Canton runners to take extra bases. After these early miscues, Wells got back on track, allowing limited damage outside of the nightmare beginnings in the pair of losses.

Lots of Express batters had great showings, with the team stacking up 17 total hits over the course of the night.

A host of first years had excellent days at the plate.

Taylor Robinson went 4-for-8 over the 2 game set, batting .500 while also crossing the plate twice in a very efficient effort.

Josie Krieman was also dangerous at the plate, going 3-for-6 with 2 RBI and a huge triple late in game 2.

Christa Koagel tore the basepaths to shreds on Wednesday, nabbing 5 stolen bases in the pair of matchups, while also notching 2 RBI on the night.

A set of sophomores also came up huge for the young Express in game 1 of the doubleheader, as Bailey Friot went 2-for-4 with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored, and teammate Sara Mattle batted 2-for-2 with 1 walk.

The Express will look towards the finale of their mini AMCC homestand on Saturday when they welcome the Carlow Celtics to the turf in a morning meeting that will serve as the second-to-last home series of the season.
