Women's Volleyball Splits Regular Season Finale

HOUGHTON, N.Y. - The Wells College women's volleyball team posted a thrilling 3-2 victory over SUNY Canton on Saturday before posting a 3-0 loss to the host Highlanders from Houghton College. Wells wraps up its regular season of play with an 18-9 overall record and will head into the North Eastern Athletic Conference postseason as the league's No. 2 seed.

Wells opened up a 2-0 lead (25-22, 25-14) against SUNY Canton, but the Kangaroos bounced back to take sets three and four by scores of 28-26 and 25-22, respectively. The Express, however, hung in there to post a 16-14 win in the decisive fifth set. Houghton won in straight sets over Wells by scores of 25-19, 25-16 and 25-23.

Wells posted 62 kills against SUNY Canton, the second-highest single match total ever for the Express. The 193 total attacks set a team record and the squad's 60 assists tied the team record. The 85 digs by Wells is fifth all-time.

Against SUNY Canton, Wells was led by 15 kills from both junior Meredith Kadjeski (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) and senior Vashti Nettles (Long Beach, Calif.). Sophomore Eliza Schwab (Hartland, N.Y.) set up 42 of her team's 62 kills and sophomore Anuhea Leite-Ah Yo (Hilo, Hawaii) posted 24 digs defensively. Schwab joined Leite-Ah Yo with a double-double, posting 20 digs alongside her 42 assists.

Nettles recorded a team-leading nine kills against Houghton. Schwab led her team with 18 assists and senior Nadine Pershyn (Buffalo, N.Y.) turned in 16 digs on defense, leading the team. Leite-Ah Yo reached the double-digit dig plateau with 10.

Wells has earned a first-round bye in the upcoming North Eastern Athletic Conference women's volleyball tournament and will play the winner of the match between Gallaudet/Lancaster Bible this Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2:30 p.m.
