Senior Spotlight: Jessica Conover

Senior Spotlight: Jessica Conover

With the cancellation of the remainder of the spring season and the winter championships, at least one Wells College senior spring student-athlete will be highlighted each weekend. Today's featured student-athlete is senior Jessica Conover from the softball team.

Jessica is a psychology major from Naugatuck, Conn., that primarily played first base when she wasn't pitching for the Express.

First-year Wells head softball coach and previous assistant coach Taylor Policay had the following to say about Jessica, "It was an absolute pleasure to be able to work with Jess the last couple of years. She is a great kid who will do anything you ask and puts in the work. Jess went through a lot of innings from the mound during her time here and she will be greatly missed."

Over her career at Wells from the circle, she appeared in 47 games and started 24 with just shy of 181 innings pitched. She recorded 70 strikeouts over her career.

At the plate, Jessica had 34 hits over 80 games with five going for extra bases. Jessica also scored 19 runs and added 10 RBI at nearly a .300 on-base percentage.

During the shortened 2020 season, Jessica pitched 13 and two-thirds innings with nine strikeouts for the Express, while adding a single and a pair of RBIs from the plate.

Why did you choose Wells College?

I chose Wells College because it gave me the ability to continue my love for softball and be a part of a revamped program which was special in its own way. Wells has so much character and sense of community that made me love it the moment I stepped on campus.

What is your favorite memory at Wells College as a student-athlete?

My favorite memory would be my last opening-day game in a Wells uniform at the end of our preseason. It was exciting to see a preview of what our seniors' last season could be like, even with a younger and newer team.

What are your plans after Wells College?

To pursue a master's degree in Industrial/organizational psychology from the University of New Haven.

What advice would you give to the next person wearing your number?

No matter the outcome of the game, keep showing up and not just for yourself but for the team. Every time you're out on the field there will be a moment that makes it all worth it, just keep your eyes open for it.

If you had a favorite class during your time at Wells College, what was it and why was it your favorite?

ASL 101, Elementary American Sign Language was my favorite. Our instructor Kip is awesome and I left every class more and more interested in the deaf community and signing, which led me to continue learning sign language this semester in ASL 102.

What will you miss the most about being a student-athlete at Wells College?

I will miss the camaraderie with other student-athletes. Because Wells is small, we tended to come together regardless of what sport we played and great friendships came out of that.
