Saturday Split Gives Baseball A Series Win Over Berks

The Wells College baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader at Penn State Berks. Wells rallied for a 13-9 win in the first game, and Berks answered with a 24-7 win in the second game. The Express took two of the three games in the North Eastern Athletic Conference series. Penn State Berks is the defending NEAC champion.

Wells will play Wednesday, April 3 at home against Utica College at 4 p.m.

WELLS 13, PENN STATE BERKS 9

For the second game in a row, Wells rallied from a seven-run deficit to defeat Penn State Berks. The Nittany Lions led 7-0 after two innings, but Wells scored once in the third, five times in the fourth and three times in the fifth to tie the score 9-9. The Express got a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh innings to account for the four-run margin.

In the fourth, four-straight singles ignited a rally. Dylan Nolan was hit by a pitch to bring in another run, Tyler Young hit a sacrifice fly and Tanner Dunkel hit a two-run double.

Three hits and two errors led to three Wells runs in the fifth and tied the score.

Wells went ahead in the top of the sixth when Mark Yorkey tripled to score Tanner Dunkel, and Yorkey later scored on a wild pitch.

Nolan hit a two-run homer in the seventh to give Wells a four-run lead, and Yorkey pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh to wrap it up.

Jared Strait was the winning pitcher. Over six innings he allowed nine runs, eight earned, on 12 hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Nolan reached base four times and scored three times. Jordan VanHerpe, Anthony Aumick, Tanner Dunkel, Mark Yorkey, Kevin Spaeth, and A.J. Nesci had two hits each.

PENN STATE BERKS 24, WELLS 7

Penn State Berks scored 13 times in the second inning and ran away with the win. They led 20-1 after four innings.

Anthony Aumick had two hits and scored twice. Ian Crawford had two hits and scored twice including a home run. Tyler Young hit a three-run homer in the ninth. Tanner Dunkel had two hits including a double.
