Wells Baseball Wins 6-1 Over Cazenovia

The Wells College baseball team got back in the win column with a 6-1 victory over Cazenovia College on Wednesday, May 1 at the Wells Turf Field. Wells is 14-19 overall and 7-8 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference.

Cazenovia got its only run of the game on a solo homer in the top of the first and from there the pitching of Zach Kemp, Alexander Mott, and Jared Strait held the Wildcats in check.

Wells broke through with four runs in the third on six hits. After a ground out to start the inning, four consecutive singles from Jordan VanHerpe, Mark Yorkey, Dylan Nolan, and Tyler Young loaded the bases and VanHerpe scored on a wild pitch. Tanner Dunkel grounded into a force out to bring in Yorkey, and A.J. Nesci followed with a two-out, two-run single to right after Dunkel stole second.

Wells added a pair of runs in the fifth on a two-run double to left field by Anthony Aumick. It was the 100th hit of the Wells career for Aumick. He is the second player to reach that milestone in the three-year history of the Wells program.

Kemp pitched five innings and allowed one run on five hits with three strikeouts. He was the winning pitcher and is 4-4 on the season. Mott and Strait each pitched a scoreless inning. Strait struck out two batters in the seventh.

This game was made-up as part of a postponed series earlier in the season and was a seven-inning scheduled game as the teams already completed two nine-inning NEAC games last month.

Nolan and Aumick had two hits each.

Wells concludes its conference season with a home series this weekend against SUNY Cobleskill.
