HOUGHTON TOPS WELLS FIELD HOCKEY

(Houghton, N.Y.)Despite 11 saves from sophomore goalie Madeline Bass (Lemon Grove, Calif./Helix) the Wells College field hockey team was unable to score as the Express fell 3-0 to Houghton College on Thursday evening in Houghton, N.Y. Hillery Duman earned the shutout victory in net for Houghton finishing with two saves. With the loss the Express fall to 0-1, while Houghton improves to 2-0.  

Houghton took an early 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Rachel Stefanski less than five minutes into play. Houghton would continue to pressure but Bass would make three saves and the Express defense would come up with three saves of their own to hold the one goal deficit. Despite the defensive effort, Houghton would squeeze their second goal past Bass at 17:43 of the first half, giving the Highlanders a 2-0 lead heading into the break.  

The Express would continue to play strong defense throughout the second half but a flurry of shots by the Highlanders would result in a goal by Emily Leonard with 11:55 remaining, sealing the victory. The Highlanders held the advantage in shots 30-6  and penalty corners 5-2.  

The Express return to action on Wednesday, September 8 against Marywood University at 7:00 p.m. in Scranton, Pa.
