Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Keuka

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – The Wells College softball team split their first road doubleheader of the season, posting a 4-0 victory in the opener before falling by a 20-0 margin in game two against the Storm of Keuka College. Exiting play on Friday, the Express sport a 1-3 overall record alongside a 1-1 mark against North Eastern Athletic Conference opponents. The Storm, playing in their first two games of the season, find both their overall and league records at 1-1.

With a 4-0 victory in the opener against Keuka, the Express posted the program's first-ever victory over the Express. Dating back to their very first game against Keuka on Apr. 4, 2000, the Express have not collected a victory against their Finger Lakes rival in 26 games.

With the score tied at zero entering the top of the fourth inning, the Express scored two runs courtesy of a Kendrick Wilson (Collins, N.Y.) RBI groundout and a Karley Raczynski (Fonda, N.Y.) RBI single up the middle. For Raczynski, the hit was the first of her collegiate career.

Wells tacked on two additional runs against Danielle Gravel as a Paige Stone (Madison, N.Y.) RBI single to right field plated freshman Marie Valliere (Chicopee, N.Y.) who dashed home following a leadoff double. A Wilson sacrifice fly plated pitcher Lorelei Meier (Caledonia, N.Y.) for the fourth Express run.

Meier (1-1) collected her first victory of the year, allowing zero earned runs across seven innings with four strikeouts. Meier's last scoreless complete game start came on Apr. 19, 2012 as she held SUNY Cobleskill without a run in the opener of a road doubleheader. Gravel dropped her first game of the season, allowing 11 hits to Wells alongside four earned runs.

Keuka dominated the Express in the second game of the doubleheader, securing a decisive 20-0 victory. The shutout loss was the first shutout loss of 20 or more runs dating back to Apr. 30, 2007, a 26-0 loss to St. John Fisher. Wells only saw one hit out of their starting lineup as Wilson broke up the no-hit bid by freshman Liz Warren, who made her collegiate debut against Wells.

The Storm saw two-hit performances by five different players as the hosts pounded out 16 hits and capitalized on four Express errors en route to their first victory of the season. Wells hurlers uncorked 10 wild pitches while Express backstops accounted for four passed balls in the second game of the doubleheader.

The Express return to action Saturday, Apr. 6 as they host the Fighting Tigers of SUNY Cobleskill in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the Wells College Softball Field.
