Softball Overpowered By SUNYIT In Saturday DH

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College softball team was swept by the visiting Wildcats of SUNY Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon at the Wells College softball field. The Express fall to 4-10 overall on the year and to 4-8 within North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Wildcats improve to 12-8 overall and to 6-2 in league play.

Wells posted a 12-1 loss in the opener to the Wildcats before being shutout via a 10-0 score – both games were called in the fifth inning. The Express have scored only one run in their last four games and have been outscored cumulatively by a 54-to-1 margin across that span.

In the first game, the Express scored their lone run of the day as pitcher Lorelei Meier (Caledonia, N.Y.) led off the game with an infield single. With Meier advancing to second following a productive out by shortstop Paige Stone (Madison, N.Y.), a booming RBI double by freshman Lindsay Achzet (Johnstown, N.Y.) plated the Express' lone run.

With the exception of designated player Alison Short and left fielder Emily Lee, every member of SUNYIT's "starting nine" recorded at least one hit. The top five batters for SUNYIT were a combined 13-for-19 and accounted for nine of their team's 11 runs batted in. Nicolette Kennedy was 4-for-4 with two runs batted in to lead the Wildcats at the plate.

Meier (4-7) was saddled with the loss, allowing 11 earned runs in five innings while striking out four and only walking one batter. Erica Hovey (8-4) held the Express to only one run, striking out five while not allowing a free pass to any Wells batter.

In game two, SUNYIT once again used their bats to power past Wells by a 10-0 margin. Catcher Kendrick Wilson (Collins, N.Y.) recorded the lone Express hit on the afternoon as Wildcats pitcher Fallon Reinold (4-4) struck out nine batters in five innings. Meier (4-8) allowed eight earned runs in five innings while striking out two batters.

The Express return to action Sunday, Apr. 21 as they host the Wildcats of Cazenovia College in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader – the softball team will honor and recognize their three graduating senior student-athletes, Meier, Stone and Lauren Dunster (Auburn, N.Y.), in a pre-game ceremony.
