Softball Blanked By Keuka In Wednesday Doubleheader

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College softball team did not muster a run as they dropped both games of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at the Wells College softball field. Following the back-to-back losses, the Express fall to 4-8 overall and to 4-6 within North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Storm even their overall record at 6-6 while improving to 4-2 in league play.

In game one, the Express were blanked by a 19-0 margin before posting a 13-0 loss in the second game. Wells has not been shutout in a doubleheader dating back to last season, dropping both games against SUNYIT by a 9-0 margin on Apr. 14, 2012. Outscoring the Express 32-to-0 in the doubleheader, Keuka posted the most runs against the Express in a doubleheader shutout sweep since dropping a 19-0 and an 18-0 contest back-to-back against Mary Baldwin College on Apr. 9, 2005.

In the last three games, Keuka has outscored Wells by a cumulative 52-0 margin.

Wells mustered only two hits against Keuka in the first game as freshmen Kylie Nishioka (Encinitas, Calif.) and Karley Raczynski (Fonda, N.Y.) were the only two members of the Express to reach base via hits. Every starter for the Storm recorded at least one hit, with Haley Jordan leading the way with a 4-for-5 performance, driving in three runs on the afternoon.

Pitcher Lorelei Meier (Caledonia, N.Y.) allowed 14 earned runs on 19 hits, walking only three and striking out five. Danielle Gravel induced six groundouts for Keuka while striking out seven Express batters en route to her second victory of the year.

The Express did not fare much better in the day's final game, posting three cumulative hits. Freshman Marie Valliere (Chicopee, Mass.) was 2-for-2 on the afternoon while junior Theresa Hernandez (Dewitt, N.Y.) added the third Express hit. Allyson Muller scored three runs and drove in four runs with a 2-for-4 performance for Keuka.

Liz Warren converted her fourth victory of the year, allowing the three Wells hits while striking out five batters. Meier allowed 16 hits and 11 earned runs while walking three batters and striking out four.

Wells returns to action Saturday, Apr. 20 as they host SUNY Institute of Technology in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the Wells College softball field.
