Elmira Comes Back To Edge Wells Field Hockey 3-2

The Wells College field hockey team built a pair of one-goal leads but dropped a 3-2 final against Elmira College on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at the Wells Turf Field.

Wells took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute with effective work on the attack. At the top of the circle, Shianne Stokes passed the ball around an Elmira defender to Kelly Mason. Mason quickly rolled a low shot through the feet of the on-rushing goalkeeper and into the cage for the first goal of the game. It was the third goal of the season for Mason.

Elmira came back to tie the score with a goal in the 24th minute following a scramble in front of the net.

Three minutes into the second half, Wells went back ahead. On a penalty corner, the Express worked the ball down to the front of the net, where Stokes made a quick pass from in front of the goalkeeper to Kate Wells at the right side of the net for a goal. It was the team-leading fourth goal of the season for Kate Wells.

Elmira tied the game in the 48th minute and scored the go-ahead goal on a penalty corner with 9:47 remaining in the second half.

Wells had a penalty corner opportunity in the final minute of the second half, but a long shot from the edge of the circle was turned away by the Elmira defense.

With two assists in the game, Stokes took over the team lead in that statistical category this season with three. Express goalkeeper Kelsey Kokosa made nine saves, her second-highest single-game total this season.

Elmira had a 21-15 advantage in shots and a 9-6 edge in penalty corners.

Wells is 2-7 through nine games this season and Elmira's record is 1-5. The Express begins North Eastern Athletic Conference play Saturday, Sept. 24 at Morrisville State College at 5 p.m.
