Softball Swept By Keuka In Friday Doubleheader

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College softball team posted back-to-back losses to the Storm of Keuka College Friday afternoon. With the losses, Wells concludes the day with a 1-9 record overall and also within the North Eastern Athletic Conference. The Storm improve to 9-5 and boast a league-leading 9-1 record against conference opponents exiting play on Friday.

The Express lost the first game by a 16-3 margin before falling in five innings to the Storm by a 12-0 final score. Sophomore Clare Harwood (Elizabethtown, N.Y.) and classmate Marie Valliere (Chicopee, Mass.) were the only two members of the Express to strike two hits across the doubleheader while freshman Kenisha Flowers (Rochester, N.Y.) picked up her team's lone run batted in with a groundout in the first game of the double dip.

In the first game, Wells trailed by a 5-1 margin through five complete innings before three errors opened the floodgates in the final two innings. The Express allowed 11 runs in the final two frames alone to eliminate any further chance of a late comeback. Each member of the starting lineup registered at least one hit for the Storm while seven different players drove in at least one run. Cumulatively, Keuka rapped 18 total hits to secure their eighth-straight league victory.

Wells pitcher Taylor Spranger (Schenevus, N.Y.) allowed 10 earned runs on 16 total hits before yielding to sophomore Lindsay Achzet (Johnstown, N.Y.) who allowed two hits in two-thirds of an inning. Danielle Gravel struck out six Express batters, allowing three runs through seven innings of work.

The Express tallied only two hits in the second game of the doubleheader en route to a 12-0 loss through five innings. Left fielder Mackenzie Cole drove in four runs singlehandedly while Samantha Blum plated three Storm base runners in the victory. Harwood and sophomore Karley Raczynski (Fonda, N.Y.) collected each of Wells' two hits in the losing effort.

Achzet drew the loss for Wells, allowing 11 earned runs through five innings. Liz Warren picked up her fifth win of the year, striking out 10 batters while limiting the Wells offense to two hits throughout the game.

Wells returns to action this Saturday, Apr. 19 as they travel to Keuka Park, N.Y. to play the Storm in their first-ever back-to-back series in the team's 15 year history. The first game of the doubleheader will begin at 1:00 p.m.
