Achzet Homers In Tuesday Doubleheader At Cobleskill St.

COBLESKILL, N.Y. – Despite a long ball from sophomore Lindsay Achzet (Johnstown, N.Y.), the Wells College softball team posted back-to-back losses to the Fighting Tigers from SUNY Cobleskill on Tuesday. With the losses, Wells concludes the day with a 1-13 overall record while the Fighting Tigers improve to 11-7 and to 9-2 within league play.

Achzet drove in all three runs for the Express on the day as Wells lost by a 10-2 margin in game one before dropping the second game by a 10-1 score. Freshman Taylor Spranger (Schenevus, N.Y.) and sophomore Marie Valliere (Chicopee, Mass.) each picked up two hits for Wells while catcher Kendrick Wilson (Collins, N.Y.) picked up the sixth hit of the day for the Express.

In game one, the Fighting Tigers opened the game with a bang as catcher Madeline DeMilio slammed a solo shot to lead off the game. With two outs, Lull hit her team's second home run of the inning to elevate her team to a 3-0 lead. Following a Wells error, Jessica DeVoe singled to score pitcher Erin Wadsworth, who reached on the two out error, to extend their lead.

Spranger reached base with one out in the top of the third on a single and later scored on Achzet's sixth career home run to cut the Cobleskill lead to 4-2. The Express defense, however, allowed six more runs to score in the home half of the fifth and sixth innings, committing three errors and allowing three unearned runs to score in the process.

Spranger, the Wells pitcher, drew the loss despite allowing only six earned runs to the Fighting Tigers in the contest. Striking out four, Spranger allowed only one free pass. Wadsworth struck out 11 Wells batters and limited the damage to only two earned runs.

In game two, Wells scored first after sophomore Karley Raczynski (Fonda, N.Y.) reached on a fielding error by the Cobleskill right fielder and advanced to second base on the miscue. Advancing to third on a wild pitch, she later scored on a sacrifice fly by Achzet to place Wells up by a 1-0 score.

The Fighting Tigers would score the game's next 10 runs off of 13 hits and two Wells errors to secure the five inning victory. DeMelio once again lifted her team's offense, collecting three hits in three at-bats and also scoring three runs from the leadoff spot. The top five batters in the Fighting Tigers order collected 10 of their team's 13 hits and drove in seven total runs.

Spranger allowed 13 hits in just over four innings for Wells. Wadsworth picked up her second pitching victory of the day, allowing one unearned run while striking out eight batters.

Wells hits the road this Thursday, Apr. 24 as they face-off against the Hawks of Hilbert College in a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
