Softball Bested By Keuka In Saturday Doubleheader

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – The Wells College softball team posted back-to-back losses to the Storm of Keuka College Saturday afternoon. Playing in the team's first ever home-and-home series across its 15 year history, the Express fell to 1-11 overall on the season. The Storm boast a North Eastern Athletic Conference leading 11-1 conference record following this afternoon's game.

The Express fell victim to the mercy rule in each game, dropping the first game of the day by a 10-2 score in five innings before being shut out by Keuka in the second game, 16-0. Wells mustered only seven hits on the afternoon, striking out 11 times cumulatively while allowing the Storm to bat nearly .500 through the two games (25-for-51, .490).

Trailing by a 5-0 margin in the top of the fourth inning, Wells struck for two runs following a home run by sophomore Lindsay Achzet (Johnstown, N.Y.), who finished the afternoon with three hits in four at-bats. The Storm answered with five runs in their half of the same inning, however, picking up five hits and taking advantage of a miscue in the outfield to extend the inning.

Freshman Taylor Spranger (Schenevus, N.Y.) drew the loss, allowing eight earned runs across four innings of work. Danielle Gravel continued her mastery of the Wells lineups, allowing only two earned runs through five innings and striking out five batters.

In the second game of the afternoon, the Express collected only three hits in a 16-0 loss. Taking to the circle in the second game, Achzet drew the loss after allowing 14 earned runs in four innings. Liz Warren improved to 6-2 for Keuka, striking out eight batters while her team scored five runs in the first inning, two in the second inning and nine runs in the third inning.

Wells faces-off against Cobleskill St. on Tuesday, Apr. 22 in a road doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
