Home Season Opener Spells Double Trouble for Opposition

The Wells College baseball team opened its season with a 12-0 win against visiting Cazenovia College at the Wells Turf Field on Sunday, March 7.

The Express got on the board with a pair of runs in the first inning and never looked back. After a single run in the second, Wells scored four more in the third for a 7-0 lead before adding five more in the eighth inning. Jordan VanHerpe (Liverpool, N.Y.) got the only run the team would need for the victory in the first inning.

Doubles were plentiful in the Express' last at-bat. Dylan Nolan (Brick, N.J.) started with the first of the team's three doubles during that inning. The senior belted a 2-RBI rocket to push the lead to 9-0. Derek Shea (West Kingston, R.I.) and Luke Eitner (N. Lehigh, Pa.) followed Nolan with doubles of their own with each earning an RBI. Julian Kemp (Ithaca, N.Y.) earned the final RBI of the inning by pushing Eitner home for the Express' final run.

Nolan and Eitner finished the afternoon with a pair of doubles each. Among the team's seven extra-base hits, both VanHerpe and Kevin Spaeth (Haddon Heights, N.J.) registered triples on the day.

On the mound, Zach Kemp (Ithaca, N.Y.) recorded the victory with eight strikeouts while allowing just a pair of hits through 6 2/3 innings. Austin Jordan (Kane, Pa.) mopped up with 2 1/3 innings of work with a pair of strikeouts in relief.

On the day, Wells finished with 16 hits and 11 RBI. Among the team leaders in hits was Zack Odum (Elmira, N.Y.) and Eitner with three each. A pair of hits went to VanHerpe, Nolan, Shea and Spaeth with one hit each to Ian Crawford (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Horne.

Five players scored a pair of runs each and included Zack Odum, Eitner, VanHerpe, Shea and Spaeth with single runs from Nolan and Joe Horne (Hicksville, N.Y.).

Four players recorded a pair of RBI each and included Nolan, Shea, Spaeth and Crawford with single RBIs to Eitner, Horne and Julian Kemp.

The Express return to action tomorrow against Cazenovia with a 4 p.m. start time.
