Wells Baseball Team Falls in First Road Contests

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Wells College baseball team took to the road for the first time this season and fell on the short end to host Lancaster Bible College on Saturday, March 27. The Express plated seven hits in each game of its first conference doubleheader. Max Odum (Elmira, N.Y.) finished the day with three hits, while four other Wells hitters finished with a pair of hits apiece over the two games.

Wells outhit Lancaster by a 7-5 total and left eight runners on base after the Chargers got all of its scoring in the fifth inning. Luke Eitner (N. Lehigh, Pa.) went the distance from the hill with no earned runs and five strikeouts in six innings of work.

Derek Shea (West Kingston, R.I.) and Kevin Spaeth (Haddon Heights, N.J.) led the Wells batters with a pair of hits each. Ryan Foody (Tully, N.Y.), Aaron Izquierdo (Palisades Park, N.J.) and Max Odum registered single hits in the opening game.

Trailing by a half-dozen runs early, the Express cut the deficit to four after a two-run third inning. Lancaster had a big fifth inning that made any rally by Wells challenging.

The Express got a pair of hits from both Jordan VanHerpe (Liverpool, N.Y.) and Max Odum, with the latter notching a double. Solo hits came from Eitner, Izquierdo and Justin Colindres (Clifton, N.J.), with the latter scoring twice.

Max Odum had the team's other run with an RBI, while Zack Odum (Elmira, N.Y.) finished with a pair of RBIs.

Austin Jordan (Kane, Pa.) took the loss from the hill after going 3 2/3 innings and allowing nine hits with six earned runs. Ben Beratta (Marcellus, N.Y) threw 1 1/3 innings, while Jack Field (Bethlehem, N.Y.) closed out the last three from the mound for the Express.

Wells next hosts Penn College on Wednesday, March 31 in another conference doubleheader with the first game slated for a 3 p.m. start.
