Express Take Pair in First Doubleheader of 2021 Season

The Wells College baseball team relied on the same winning formula in a pair of wins against visiting St. Lawrence University on Sunday, March 14. In both contests, Wells spotted the opposition a 2-0 lead. The Express then put together back-to-back multi-run innings in each game to carry them to victory. In the first game, Wells combined for all 12 of its runs in the fourth and fifth innings for a 12-5 victory and in the second game, the team scored a combined seven runs in the third and fourth innings for an 8-5 win.

Game 1 Wells 12 St. Lawrence 5

Zack Odum (Elmira, N.Y.) and Jordan VanHerpe (Liverpool, N.Y.) powered the team to its opening game win. Both batters finished 2-for-2 at the plate. Odum finished with a pair of extra base hits with two triples, one run and one RBI. VanHerpe finished with a team-best four RBI with a double and one run.

Rounding out the hits for Wells was Dylan Nolan (Brick, N.J.) with one run and one RBI and Luke Eitner (N. Lehigh, Pa.) with a pair of runs. Also scoring a pair of runs was Kevin Spaeth (Haddon Heights, N.J.) and Joe Horne (Hicksville, N.Y.). In addition to runs by Zack Odum, VanHerpe and Nolan; single scores came from Derek Shea (West Kingston, R.I.), Ian Crawford (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Max Odum (Elmira, N.Y.).

After a big eight-run fourth inning, the Saints made it interesting with three runs in the top of the fifth for an 8-5 game, but the Express responded in the bottom of that inning with four runs and a 12-5 lead to crush St. Lawrence's momentum.

Zach Kemp (Ithaca, N.Y.) earned the win with eight strikeouts after allowing seven hits in five innings of the seven-inning game. Shea relieved Kemp for the final two innings with a pair of strikeouts and one hit allowed.

Game 2 Wells 8 St. Lawrence 5

Dylan Nolan stole the spotlight in the second game after belting a grand slam for the team's first four runs. Nolan finished the day going 2-for-2 at the plate with a homerun and a double and in the process registering six RBI.

VanHerpe and Ryan Foody (Tully, N.Y.) joined Nolan with a pair of hits, while single hits came from Zack Odum, Shea, Crawford and Max Odum. Van Herpe joined Nolan and Max Odum as the trio each crossed the plate twice. Single runs came from Crawford and Zack Odum, with the latter adding a single RBI along with Shea.

Jared Strait (Lansing, N.Y.) got the win on the hill after fanning eight and allowing five hits in five innings. In the fifth inning, Strait was perhaps at his best after the Saints loaded the bases with no outs. The senior hurler struck out the next three batters to end the St. Lawrence rally. Shea earned a save for his 1 1/3 innings of work in closing the game and allowing just a single hit after Chase Sebastian (Eldred, Pa.) came in relief of Strait.

The Express will look to make it three in a row this Wednesday, March 17 when they host Utica College at 4:30 p.m.
