Stranded Runners Costly in Wells Baseball Defeat

The Wells College baseball team split a two-game series with Cazenovia College after dropping the second game of back-to-back games by an 8-2 score on Monday, March 8. The Express topped the Wildcats the previous day by a 12-0 score.

The Express left double-digit stranded runners that ultimately cost them the contest. Of 11 men left on base for Wells, six were in scoring position.

The Express stranded seven runners in the opening four innings with four in scoring position and only one run on the board courtesy of Ryan Foody (Tully, N.Y.), who led Wells with three hits on the day.

The hits were almost equal with Cazenovia holding a slight edge by a 7-6 margin.

In addition to Foody, Ian Crawford (Syracuse, N.Y.), Dylan Nolan (Brick, N.J.) and Jordan VanHerpe (Liverpool, N.Y.) also recorded hits with the latter two registering RBIs. Joe Horne (Hicksville, N.Y.) scored the other Express run in the final inning.

Jared Strait (Lansing, N.Y.) took the loss from the hill after going 4 1/3 innings and allowing six hits and seven runs with six strikeouts. Chase Sebastian (Eldred, Pa.) and Derek Shea (West Kingston, R.I.) came in relief and combined for seven strikeouts while allowing just one hit and one run collectively.

The Express next host Alfred State on Thursday, March 11 with a 4:30 p.m. start.
