Baseball Team Rallies to Take Second Game of Conference Doubleheader

The Wells College baseball team concluded a home-and-home weekend series against Penn College in four close games. On Sunday, April 18, the visiting Wildcats took the first contest 9-8 in a nine-inning game originally scheduled for seven while the Express rallied to take the second game by a 2-1 score.

Three of the four games this weekend were decided by just a single run, while a pair of runs decided the other.

Game Two

Derek Shea (West Kingston, R.I.) completed the Express rally with a solo homerun to give Wells the 2-1 victory in what proved to be the team's last at-bat. Prior to that, Penn took a 1-0 lead in the first before a Jordan VanHerpe (Liverpool, N.Y.) single brought in Zack Odum (Elmira, N.Y.) for the tying run in the third inning.

Jared Strait (Lansing, N.Y.) pitched all seven innings for Wells in earning his third win of the season with nine strikeouts, no earned runs and four hits allowed.

The Express had four hits. In addition to Shea and VanHerpe, Kevin Spaeth (Haddon Heights, N.J.) and Ryan Foody (Tully, N.Y.) had the team's other hits.

Game One

Wells kept its composure and eventually rallied from a six-run deficit to knot the score at 8-8 before Penn got the winning run in the ninth. The Express had a pair of four-run innings and cut the deficit to 6-4 in the second, and then tied the game at 8-8 with another four-run inning in the fourth.

In the second inning, Luke Eitner (N. Lehigh, Pa.) got the first run after Zack Odum reached on an error. Max Odum (Elmira, N.Y.) scored Foody on a sacrifice fly for the second run. VanHerpe then doubled to score Zack Odum and Ian Crawford (Syracuse, N.Y.) for the team's third and fourth runs.

In the fourth inning, Zack Odum and Max Odum both singled to bring in the team's fifth and sixth runs. Aaron Izquierdo (Palisades Park, N.J.) then scored both Odums with a 2-RBI single to tie the score at 8-8.

The Express finished with eight hits from eight different players with three earning a pair of RBIs that included Max Odum, VanHerpe and Izquierdo.

Austin Jordan (Kane, Pa.) took the loss from the mound after allowing three hits with a pair of strikeouts in two innings of work. Jack Field (Bethlehem, N.Y.) entered the game after Penn scored their first eight runs and held the Wildcats at bay for four innings in allowing three hits with three strikeouts.

The baseball team next hosts Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday, April 21.
