Baseball Team Scores Baker’s Dozen in Senior Day Finale

The Wells College baseball team matched a season-high for runs in a game this season with 13 and fell just one hit shy of matching the most hits in a game this season after registering 16 on the evening in a come-from-behind 13-6 victory over visiting SUNY Poly on Wednesday, May 5 on Senior Day.

The Express took an early 3-1 lead after three innings, but a five-run fourth inning gave the Wildcats the lead at 6-3. Wells scored 10 unanswered runs to take the game after a six-run sixth inning put the Express up for good at 9-6. The sixth produced seven of the team's 16 hits with three going for extra bases. Kevin Spaeth (Haddon Heights, N.J.), Ian Crawford (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Luke Eitner (N. Lehigh, Pa.) belted doubles in the sixth inning with Eitner scoring the go-ahead and winning run.

Eitner and Spaeth finished the game with three hits each with Eitner collecting a pair of doubles on the day. Two hits each came from Derek Shea (West Kingston, R.I.), Joe Horne (Hicksville, N.Y.), Zack Odum (Elmira, N.Y.) and Max Odum (Elmira, N.Y.), with the latter bringing home the winning run. Solo hits went to Dylan Nolan (Brick, N.J.) and Crawford. In addition to Eitner, Crawford and Spaeth, extra base hits also went to Nolan, Zack Odum and Shea, with the latter recording a triple.

Shea finished with a team-best three RBI, while a pair each came from Horne and Spaeth. Single RBI's went to Crawford, Eitner and both Odums.

Eitner scored three runs, while Max Odum and Zack Odum finished with a pair of runs apiece. Jordan VanHerpe (Liverpool, N.Y.), Nolan, Crawford, Spaeth, Horne and Justin Colindres (Clifton, N.J.) scored single runs.

Jared Strait (Lansing, N.Y.) won his fifth game of the season after allowing five hits with eight strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings of work. Austin Jordan (Kane, Pa.) and Shea finished the game from the hill and they collectively allowed one hit with three strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings.

The team's 13 runs scored matched games against Clarks Summit and Lancaster Bible earlier this season. The only game where Wells had more hits in a game this season was against Clarks Summit. Wells finished the season with an 11-9 home record with the 11 wins matching a program record for most home wins in a season from 2017.

In a pregame ceremony, Wells honored six departing seniors that included Strait, Nolan, Spaeth, VanHerpe, Shea and Crawford with all six in the starting lineup. Of the five that batted, they collectively finished tonight's contest with seven hits, six runs and six RBI.
