Wells Baseball Opens Season at USMMA

Wells Baseball Opens Season at USMMA

Saturday afternoon brought the opening game for the Wells Express Baseball team.

They opened the season on the road at USMMA with one game on Saturday and a doubleheader on Sunday.

On Saturday, Benny Beratta, the junior, got the start for the Express. he went 5 innings giving up 3 runs and 9 hits. When he exited the game the express found themselves down by a score of 3-1. The Express bullpen was able to shutdown USMMA for the remainder of the game thanks to Jack Fields and Austin Jordan who went a combined 4 innings and gave up 0 hits and 0 runs. In the 7th inning, the Express were able to take advantage of some fielding errors and jump ahead by a score of 4-3. Justin Colindres scored an insurance run for the Express in the 8th inning making it 5-3 which was the final score giving the Express their first win of the season. (W, Jack Fields).

Sunday was a different story for Wells College. Chase Sebastian made his first start of the season for the Express and unfortunately did not make it further than the first inning. He gave up 2 hits, 4 walks, and 5 runs to give USMMA an early lead of 5-0. Joe Cuddy relieved Sebastian in the second inning but had a rough go of it against USMMA and gave up 4 hits, 3 walks, and 7 runs. By the time the 3rd inning had come around the Express found themselves down 13-0 which ended up being the final score. (L, Chase Sebastian).

Game 3 was up next and so far both teams had gained a victory and sat at 1-1 on the weekend. Connor Carr- Matthews was given the nod for the Express in the rubber game and looked to give the Express their second win of the season. Carr- Matthews struggled however as he gave up 6 runs on 7 hits. When he was relieved in the 4th inning, the Express were down by a score of 6-1. The one run had come when Justin Colindres scored on a single by Max Odum in the first inning. The rest of the afternoon was more of the same for the Express as their bullpen gave up another 13 runs to USMMA and fell in the third game of the series by a score of 19-2.

The Express will host Keuka College on Tuesday for their first home game of the season!
